Day 5 Saturday May 1 2021 Tarpon Springs to Saint Petersburg
Today's Ride is 43.7 miles. The complete route can be found here. We leave Tarpon Springs and travel down the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. In the 1980s, 34 miles (55 km) of railroad trackage in Pinellas County was abandoned, and purchased by the Florida Department of Transportation. After voter approval, the County acquired the property and began construction of the Pinellas Trail. A helicopter video of the trail can be found below. The first city we arrive at after leaving Tarpon Springs is Dunedin. Dunedin offers a particularly pleasant scene, with shops, restaurants, public restrooms, and parking, all located directly on the Pinellas Trail. At mile 10.9 (just south of Dunedin) we leave the Pinellas Trail and head west to ride along the water's edge for 1.5 miles via the newly completed Hubbard Park Trail. At mile 12.8, we rejoin The Pinellas Trail as it proceeds into downtown Clearwater. At mile 14.7, we exit the trail again and head due west. We will travel 2.5 miles across the Memorial Causeway Bike Trail to Clearwater Beach. We are planning lunch (brunch) on the beach at Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill with our support team (see photo above). After lunch, we travel south for 4.5 miles with The Gulf of Mexico off to our right. At mile 21.8, we'll once again turn east to rejoin the the Pinellas Trail in Largo FL at mile 24.7. At mile 42.3, we pass by Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays MLB team. For the remainder of the trip, we will remain on the Pinellas Trail until we reach the end at mile 43.7. The ride ends at Fresco's Waterfront Bistro located in the St Petersburg Municipal Marina.
